About the Kispiox Special Pacific & Steelhead Fly
The Kispiox Special is a bold, high confidence winter steelhead fly designed to trigger aggressive takes when fish aren’t in a feeding mood. With its colourful, high-contrast profile, it’s ideal as a searching steelhead fly pattern when you need something that shows up fast and looks like it belongs in big, cold river water.
Once a steelhead enters the freshwater river systems, it no longer feeds which makes it pretty difficult to catch one. Although they don't bite out of a feeding instinct, they will hit a lure or a fly as an aggressive response to something that appears right in front of their face.
Fishing Tips:
How it works
- High-visibility trigger profile: The Kispiox Special is deliberately “exciting and colourful”, which helps it stand out in winter light and give steelhead a clear target.
- Aggression response, not feeding: Steelhead often hit from territorial/aggressive reaction once they’ve entered freshwater, and this pattern is built to provoke exactly that.
- Confidence “search” fly: It’s the sort of fly you tie on when you want to cover water efficiently and make fish show their hand.
How to fish it
- Fish it on rivers and streams with a setup that keeps it in the lane: a sink tip or heavier leader system if you need depth, then let it swim under tension on the swing.
- Start with a steady swing, then add the occasional gentle pulse (small twitches rather than big strips) to make the materials breathe.
- Work methodically: short steps down the run, and give each bucket a proper swing; this style of winter steelhead fly rewards coverage.
