About the Magga Salmon Atlantic Fly

The Magga is a distinctive Icelandic salmon fly with a colour scheme that breaks the usual rules; and that's exactly why it works! Originally created by Einar Páll Garðarsson from Iceland, the Magga is best known for its purple/lilac influence, an unusual tone in Atlantic salmon flies that has nevertheless proved consistently successful.

This is primarily a mid-summer through autumn pattern and is most often tied in smaller treble sizes (commonly #10-16) on both silver and black trebles. It also has a reputation as a very effective Arctic char fly, which speaks volumes about its 'trigger' appeal in clear, cold water.

Fishing Tips:

This Magga is tied with a bright, reflective body (a multi-toned tinsel/flash look), a hot pink throat, and a long, flowing wing of white and blue fibres with flash strands. That combination creates:

  • High visibility in clear water without looking bulky
  • Lots of movement from the long wing fibres as the fly swings
  • A strong colour hit (pink/purple/blue) that can switch fish on when more conventional shades are ignored
