The 'The Golden Butterfly' was born as the result of Patrick McKays' visit to a Ballyshannon hat shop in or around 1810. Where he discovered an array of exotic feathers from the distant continents of Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Pattern Dressings

  • Tag : Fine silver twist and gold floss.
  • Tail : Golden pheasant topping and barred wood duck.
  • Butt : Black ostrich herl.
  • Body : Yellow floss silk.
  • Ribs : Medium gold twist.
  • Throat : Three toppings, curved downwards.
  • Wing : A topping applied edgewise on each side of the body to curve inwards, both ends meeting midway along the tail. Also one large topping tied on the top to curve upwards.
  • Cheeks : A cock of the rock feather on each side, tied high and edgewise, and a kingfisher feather on each side tied low.
  • Head : Black ostrich herl and black tapered thread, varnished.
