Loch Earn

Loch Earn is located in central Scotland west of Perth. It is a freshwater Loch with Wild Trout, stocked Brown Trout, Rainbows, Arctic Char, various Minnows and the occasional Salmon and Sea Trout can be found.

It is also home to Eels which are protected in Scotland. You are not allowed to fish for eels and must release if accidentally caught.

The Gilly Website (external resource) also has some great tips on how to best fish Loch Earn and make the most of your visit.

Tips on how best to fish Loch Earn

In the warmer months, fish will patrol the shallows before the shelf breaks for deeper water. Either stick to the shoreline and keep on the move until you gain some interest, or put on some chest waders to get up close in the water, but take care as there can be some steep drop-offs into the depths!

What flies should I use on Loch Earn?

You can find a selection of suggested flies below, but generally both your traditional Dry and Wet flies will fit the bill. A variety of Zulu's, Cormorants, Diawl Bachs, Buzzers and Hare's Ear should suffice when fishing for the Wild, Brown and Rainbow trout that can be found in this Loch.

The occasional Sea Trout and Salmon may find its way up the river, but these are not the primary fish to target at this Loch. If you wish to take some on the off chance you spot some, or are fishing on the River Earn, then we would recommend either the Alexander single sea trout or the flying treble pattern, and for the occasional salmon, general salmon patterns from Scotland can be chosen.
