About the Coachman Trout Fly

A good dusk pattern and an excellent night fly that is effective on both river and still waters.

According to fly fishing folk lore the creator of the 'Coachman' was Tom Bosworth who was reputedly coachman to George 1V, William 1V and Queen Victoria.

The fly he created lives on in flyboxes all over the world as one of the most successful and reliable patterns on both sides of the Atlantic.

It was created in the 1830's as a wet fly but soon proved its' effectiveness when used as a dry fly

Expert Tip:

The 'Field' in 1853 put forward an alternative coachman, John Hughes of Kent, also a coachman as the inventor of this pattern, another variation the Dark Coachman is attributed to H R Francis 1870.
