When should I fish with the Bumble Ballcock JC?

This graph shows trends of when fly fishermen use the Bumble Ballcock JC to fish with and what hooks are most popular throughout the fly-fishing season.

About the Bumble Ballcock JC Trout Fly

The Bumble Ballcock JC is a traditional-style wet fly originally tied for the great loughs of Western Ireland, but it has since proved its worth on stillwaters, dams and reservoirs throughout the UK and Europe. It is a bold, mobile bumble pattern with Jungle Cock cheeks, giving it that extra flash and target point which trout so often respond to in wave, ripple and broken water.

Like many bumble flies, the Ballcock JC is especially effective when fished as part of a traditional loch-style team. It can be worked on the top dropper or bob fly, where its profile and movement help draw fish up, or fished singly when trout are taking wet flies just below the surface.

This is a fine choice for anglers fishing loughs, lakes and reservoirs when trout are looking for movement, silhouette and a confident wet-fly presentation.

Fishing Tips:

Fish the Bumble Ballcock JC on a floating or intermediate line, especially when there is a good ripple on the water. It is well suited to a traditional team of wet flies and can be used on the top dropper to create disturbance and draw attention to the cast.

Use a steady retrieve with occasional pauses, or short pulls to make the fly pulse through the surface layers. On Irish-style loughs and larger reservoirs, it is particularly useful when drifting across waves, slicks and holding water where trout are feeding on hatching insects, terrestrials or general surface food.

  • Best for: Brown trout, rainbow trout and stocked stillwater trout
  • Best fishing style: Loch-style wet-fly fishing, team of flies, bob fly or top dropper
  • Originally tied for: Western Irish loughs
