They are also known as toe biters and are found in freshwater streams and rivers, where they live in the sediment and feed on other aquatic invertebrates. They have a hard, segmented exoskeleton, and they are typically brown or black in color.
During the adult stage, the dobsonfly is a large and distinctive looking insect that has long, delicate wings and large mandibles. The adult insects are not typically encountered as frequently as the larvae because they live for a shorter period of time, typically just a few weeks, during which time they are primarily active at night and are not often seen by humans.
