About the Grenadier Trout Fly

Dr Howard Alexander Bell created the Grenadier for fishing on his favourite water, Blagdon Reservoir.

It is a successful still water and reservoir fly and although it seems to represent nothing in particular, the trout will take it at various depths throughout the season.

John Goddard suggests it should be used on hot, calm days as a dropper on a slow sinking line, fished in a similar manner to a buzzer with a slow retrieve.

Expert Tip:

As a Doctor, H A Bell witnessed the appalling horrors of the 1st World War front line dressing stations. On his return to England he began fly fishing as a restorative and pleasurable pastime, preferring to fish alone.

In the 1920s he developed imitative patterns nicknamed 'Bell's Bugs' which were very successful.
