About the Blue Dun Trout Fly
This ancient pattern has been a consistently successful pattern when tied with either horsehair as it was originally in the mid-1600s or with today's modern fluorocarbon tippets.
If you have only a few patterns of flies to choose from, be certain and to use the Blue Dun for your early season fishing.
Expert Tip:
In America the Blue Dun very successfully represents many grey mayflies. It is an old standby tied in "Catskill" style, upright wings with sparse hackle. All are still some of the best patterns around for matching the hatch or just attracting fish.
On British and European streams and rivers, the classic Blue Dun represents the olive upright and has done for over a century.

Pattern Dressings
- Suggested original tying.
- Hook : 12-14.
- Thread : Grey.
- Tail : Medium blue dun hen's hackle.
- Body : Blue rabbit fur.
- Wing : Starling.
- Hackle : Medium blue dun hen.
There are variations on the body dressing, the blue fur of rabbit, mole or water rat can be used and 300 years ago the down from a greyhound was recommended by Charles Cotton.
Ribbing is sometimes added. Use yellow tying silk or fine silver wire.
